Chernobyl Trip

The effects of Chernobyl nuclear accident are still being felt 20 years later. The disaster occurred at 1:23 am on April 26, 1986, when a safety test of reactor N°4 went horribly wrong. Two explosions blew the top off the reactor, and radiation at least 100 times that of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombs combined was released, in time spreading over the whole Northern Hemisphere.

Now it's almost safe to spend several tours on the territory of the dead. You can walk through the abandoned town of Pripyat, see an amusement park that looks like a haunted playground, with a large Ferris wheel rusted over. A merry-go-round whose seats sway slowly in the wind. Ten-story apartment buildings that stay empty and abandoned. Four-lane highways leading to nowhere. What has happened to all of the people who lived here? What has become of the children? You'll get all answers during the tour.

NB! Although Kyiv is only 130km south of Chernobyl, the capital is completely safe. Belarus, only 12km north of Chernobyl, was worst hit.

! Level of radiation that you may get at the plant does not exceed the one you get while taking a jet and is lower than during medical radiography.

If it's too long or too scary for you to make the tour to the actual place of tragedy, but you are still very interested in the whole story, we will take you to the National Museum of Chernobyl. This museum does an excellent job of actually making you feel like you are at the site of the infamous nuclear accident. Road signs from towns and villages near Chernobyl greet you as you ascend the stairs, and as you descend the signs are crossed out to signify your departure. It's usually rather empty, but then again so is the contamination zone. Bring a big group and make the attendants show you the diorama and video. A few exhibits could be a bit scary for kids, such as life-sized costumes with gas masks and pictures of deformed animals.
